Hitachi GST produces not only TV sets and other equipment, but also interested in robotics. Hitachi has developed a robot to support people’s daily lives. Robot EMIEW (Excellent Mobility and I nteractive Existence as Work-mate), developed by the company, balancing on the wheels, using technology similar to the Segway. Therefore, it can move faster (speed up to 6 km / h) and more reliable than the two-legged robots, the reaction time is 100 milliseconds.
EMIEW robot was created under the project on the practical application of the new generation of robots – commissioned by the organization of NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization).
EMIEW has two arms, each with six degrees of freedom that allow it to move them naturally, almost as much as a man manipulates his hands.
The robot has a digital camera and radar sensors installed in the head and body: it avoids collisions with obstacles. By using sound sensors EMIEW can communicate using the technology of speech synthesis, voice of a man at a distance of about one meter. He analyzes several differences in the sounds of sensors to determine the direction of the sound source and track the movement of people through technology “motion capture”. All this allows him to both “hear” the sounds and voices from different places.
