Shortly before the anniversary, the camera from the orbiter Mars Global Surveyor (AMS) carried a photograph covering an area d ‘about 3 km of side pointing to the location of the robot in the region of Columbia Hills. The first illustration below shows the image of the November 2, 2005 with a spatial resolution of about 50 centimeters per pixel. The white frame indicates the location of the view in the second illustration. The second illustration shows Spirit’s location on November 2, 2005. The South of the region (down) image is the area where the rover is currently located. The Great Dark Spot and other smaller turbines are accumulations of sand and gravel.

The third illustration at right shows the location of the rover in the image of the November 2 inside a white circle. At left, the same place photographed January 10, 2004. At that time nobody would have hoped that the robot never reaches Columbia Hills. A year later Mars, the rover reached its peak and then back down the other side.
